Sometimes you don’t want to be ‘central’ for your city visit. Sometimes nearby suits just fine, and that’s why The Inn Above Tide is so genius. Perched on the shoreline in Sausalito, the luxury coastal hotel is an easy 30-minute ferry ride from San Francisco city, ideal if you’re feeling slightly frayed around the edges and are eager for small dosage city time rather than the whole in-your-face shibang. With only 29 apartment-like suites, a stay here will restore sanity, especially since the rooms are practically bent over the shoreline, with wraparound, floor-to-ceiling glass windows and roomy terraces that were no doubt designed with afternoon wines and peering through binoculars in mind. It’s unpretentious, laidback and will lull you into a far better frame of mind than you’ve had in years.
