Founded in 1861, it’s Australia’s oldest public art gallery and is home to one of the world’s finest art collections, plus it also features some blockbuster exhibitions. In addition to their vast Australian and Pacific collections, the gallery is also home to a number of masterpieces by Monet, Rembrandt, Picasso and Uccello. When celebrating its 150th birthday in 2011, the gallery treated itself to a new piece – a high regarded painting by Correggio – “Madonna and child with infant Saint John the Baptist” – not a bad $5.2 million birthday gift!
