A new-comer to an already crowded café scene, Two Birds, One Stone has all the ingredients of a hipster hit.

Melbourne’s coffee scene has come a hell of a long way in the last few years. When I got here the standard brew was an aggressive cup of La’vazza and a moody forkful of eggs and b. Nobody had even heard of a savoury muffin. These days a new place opens up each week, and moustachioed hipsters will peddle their fancy fixies and wander their bandy legs far and wide to be seen looking like they don’t care if they get seen somewhere nobody’s ever heard of before. Of all this recent café crowd, Two Birds One Stone stands out. The trio responsible for Three Bags Full (a Melbourne institution) have taken their passion for food and attention to detail and opened up shop next to the South Yarra train station. The Salted Cod Fritter (get it with the poached egg) is simple, beautiful, and probably the most original (without being ridiculous) breakfast I can remember. No savoury muffins, though.
