After a recent expedition to Taiwan, Tim Lambourne gives us the run down on his all time favourite dumpling house in the country’s capital city, Taipei.

If Auckland’s Instagram and Twitter community is anything to go by, you’re going to want to check out one of the best dumpling restaurants on the planet the next time you’re in Taiwan. The restaurant in question is Din Tai Fung, a veritable dumpling institution with restaurants and Michelin stars planted all over the globe. Taipei is its home however, with multiple branches across the city, so take some time to experience the best Xiaolongbao I’ve ever had.

Xiaolongbao, commonly referred to as a soup dumpling, is the king of all dumplings. The soup is left inside the dumpling along with the filling which results in a literal taste explosion in your mouth when you bite into it. The seaweed and dessert dumplings are also well worth the wait, but be warned, the queues often spill out onto the street when the lunchtime crowd arrives.

Side note: The next time you’re having the vinegar vs soy sauce debate over dumplings, Din Tai Fung recommend a combination. One part soy sauce to three parts vinegar. You’re welcome.
